Sustainnovate · London
Developing novel safety technologies at the intersection of maritime operations, electric vehicles and artificial intelligence — from the ocean to your driveway.
Who We Are
Sustainnovate is a London-based innovation company that identifies, develops and holds intellectual property across emerging technology domains — from electric vehicle safety and maritime technology to domestic applications and beyond.
Our innovations are not born in laboratories. They are grounded in lived experiences across different domains of life — giving our solutions a practical edge that purely academic or corporate innovation often lacks. We design with policy makers in mind — prioritising ease of adoption, regulatory feasibility and real-world scalability from day one.
We are currently developing working prototypes across our portfolio, with active engagement with manufacturers and development partners across Asia.

Founder — Lional Sharon
My career began at sea — over a decade of ship handling that taught me discipline, leadership under pressure and an instinct for solving problems before they escalate. From the bridge, I moved into the commercial world — working as a Central Planner, earning my PQE with the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers. Today I contribute to international maritime policy at the United Nations, representing global ship owning associations at the IMO and beyond. I am a founder, an innovator and a continuous learner — building Sustainnovate to solve problems I have lived first-hand.

Six innovations addressing critical, largely unsolved safety challenges across the maritime and EV sectors. Our specialisation lies in lithium battery fire mitigation, maritime vessel safety and container protection.
Intelligent Thermal Runaway Prediction & Containment System
Electric vehicles are transforming global transport — but lithium-ion battery fires remain one of the most dangerous and unpredictable consequences of this revolution. By the time a fire becomes visible, the internal chemical reaction has already been underway for up to 45 minutes. Firefighters arrive on average 15–20 minutes after a fire starts, with no advance warning. A single EV fire in a driveway can destroy an entire home within minutes.
Sustainnovate has developed an intelligent thermal runaway prediction and communication architecture that detects early warning signs long before a fire develops, simultaneously alerts the vehicle owner and local fire services in real time, and autonomously deploys a smart containment system at source — before flames take hold.
The benefits extend far beyond fire prevention. Continuous battery health data creates transparency for government regulators. Insurers gain predictive risk data that dramatically reduces claims. The used EV market gains trusted, data-backed battery health records — transforming how second-hand EVs are valued and sold.
AI-Powered Ship Abnormal Behaviour Prediction System
Container loss at sea costs the industry billions annually — in cargo damage, environmental impact and insurance claims. The root cause is often abnormal ship motion: synchronous resonance, parametric rolling and other hazardous behaviours that develop gradually but strike suddenly.
Our Vessel Behaviour Prediction System is a bridge-based AI system that continuously monitors and plots the integrated roll and pitch characteristics of a vessel in real time — identifying unique geometric signatures of dangerous motion patterns before they fully develop. The system analyses 22 independent variables, builds a dynamic predictive model, and alerts the officer on watch 20–30 minutes before an abnormal condition takes hold — giving crew ample time to take evasive action.
The system can also simulate entire voyage conditions by integrating weather forecast data, route information, cargo stability profiles and vessel-specific design parameters — making it a powerful tool for pre-departure voyage planning as well as real-time monitoring.
Autonomous Multi-Sensor Safety System for Vehicle Carrier Ships
As electric vehicles are increasingly shipped as cargo aboard vehicle carrier vessels, the fire risk they carry on car decks is significant and largely unmanaged. Current detection methods are reactive — by the time a fire is detected, thermal runaway is already underway.
Our Marine EV Safety System is an autonomous multi-sensor system that continuously monitors the car deck environment after departure — scanning beneath vehicle chassis, recording temperature and environmental data for each vehicle at pre-determined intervals, and identifying developing hotspots. Data is transmitted to a deck hub and central server via LAN, where an AI system monitors for anomalies and issues early warnings to the crew — well before any fire event develops. Swarm configuration is available for large vessel decks.
A world-first system for on-deck container fire management
Container fires at sea are among the most dangerous incidents a crew can face. By the time a fire is detected, it has already taken hold — smoke must first develop inside a sealed container, find its way out, and be spotted by human eye or camera. Access is then severely restricted by height — current firefighting systems reach only up to 3 container tiers, yet modern vessels load up to 16 tiers high on a 24,000 TEU ship. The upper stacks are effectively unreachable by any existing system. Lives have been lost. Ships abandoned. Cargo worth hundreds of millions destroyed.
Sustainnovate is developing a novel above-deck container fire detection and suppression system — bringing early detection and targeted firefighting capability to the highest container stacks, where no solution currently exists.
Localised fire containment for EV cargo at sea
As electric vehicles are increasingly shipped as cargo, the risk of thermal runaway at sea presents a unique and growing challenge. Sustainnovate is developing a novel localised fire containment system designed for ship deck deployment — engineered to contain any thermal event to a single vehicle and prevent fire from spreading to surrounding cargo or vessel structure.
For Investors
The world is changing faster than its safety infrastructure can keep up. Sustainnovate exists precisely at this intersection — developing technologies the market urgently needs but does not yet have.
EV adoption is accelerating globally. Container shipping losses cost billions annually. On-deck fires remain entirely unaddressed. These are not future problems — they are happening today.
Our founder contributes to international maritime safety regulations at the IMO. We do not just understand the regulatory environment — we help shape it. Our innovations are designed for adoption.
Decades of relationships with ship owners, P&I clubs, insurers and regulators give Sustainnovate direct access to the decision-makers needed to pilot and scale rapidly.
Six innovations across EV safety and maritime technology — three patent applications filed, three in active drafting. A pipeline, not a single bet.
We are seeking investment partners who believe safety innovation is not just a moral imperative — it is a significant commercial opportunity. Open to seed funding, strategic partnerships and licensing arrangements.

Potential Impact
Every innovation Sustainnovate develops is measured against a simple question — how many lives, homes, ships and ecosystems could this protect?
EV battery fires and maritime incidents claim lives every year. Early prediction and autonomous containment give people and crews the time needed to act safely — before situations become catastrophic.
A single EV fire in a residential driveway can destroy an entire home within minutes. Our EV Fire Safety Innovation aims to contain the risk before it becomes a catastrophe — protecting families and neighbourhoods.
Predictive battery health data and vessel behaviour analytics create a new layer of risk intelligence for insurers — dramatically reducing claims across motor, marine cargo and hull insurance.
Trusted, data-backed battery health records for every registered EV transform how second-hand vehicles are valued, bought and sold — bringing transparency to a market that currently operates on guesswork.
Thousands of containers lost at sea every year contribute to marine pollution. Our Vessel Behaviour Prediction System's early warning system directly reduces this environmental impact — protecting ocean ecosystems.
The men and women who crew our ships deserve better tools. Our innovations put actionable, real-time intelligence in the hands of officers — reducing the human cost of maritime incidents.
With direct involvement in IMO policy forums, Sustainnovate's innovations are designed to inform and align with the next generation of international maritime safety regulations.
Container losses and fires cost global trade billions annually. Our innovations protect cargo, reduce delays and strengthen the resilience of international supply chains.
Designed from day one for policy alignment and regulatory feasibility, our technologies are built to scale — from a single ship to an entire fleet, from one city to a national EV safety standard.
